35 Egypt presidential elections 2014

Egypt presidential elections
2014

The 2014 presidential elections scheduled for Monday and Tuesday provide a choice between only two candidates, Nasserist politician Hamdeen Sabbahi and former army chief Abdel Fatah al-Sisi

This is the second presidential elections to be held since the January 25 Revolution in 2011

The first was held in May and June of 2012, when Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Morsi became Egypt’ s first democratically elected president

After one year in power, however, mass demonstrations led to Morsi’ s ouster by the military on July 3, 2013

The country then began a transitional period with a political roadmap scheduled to end with a new round of elections

Today, a Presidential Election Law regulates candidates, campaigns, and voting. The Supreme Electoral Committee (SEC) drafted the law, and interim President Adly Mansour passed it on March 8, 2014 to replace law No 174/2005, which was issued under the 1971 constitution

On March 30, 2014, the Presidential Electoral Committee (PEC) opened the door for candidate registration. Sisi and Sabbahi were the only two people able to fulfill the endorsement requirements
